Our student council met for the first time today. We spoke about key issues related to year seven and came up with great ideas that will help break/lunchtimes run smoothly and also some proposals to help keep the school site litter free.
We were all very excited about the funding that the academy is recieving and Year seven A and B teams played Park this week. The A squad drew 0-0 but they dominated the game but could not break down Parks defence and get that vital goal. The B team contested a open contest and played some fast flowing football. Next fixtures are away at South Molton.
The new year sevens have made a great start at Ilfracombe Academy. They have had a busy few weeks completing CAT tests, getting used to the school building and meeting their new teachers. Lots of year sevens helped out at open evening last week and did the school proud, they really enjoyed showing the year 5/6 students and parents what the academy has to offer. October looks to be just as busy as the students have the opportunity to sign up for the leadership groups and student council, also the PE fixtures start against local schools so we are hoping for sporting success as well - fingers crossed !
All Yr6 students visited the academy for their induction day this Tuesday and they had a fantastic day meeting new members of staff and having a taste of the exciting lessons they will have in September.
There were a few nervous faces at the start of the day, mine included as it is a big step up from primary school are there are currently over 150 students in the year group, but once the day had started everyone was really excited abut what the academy has to offer. Im sure they are really looking forward to September and starting the new challenge of life in secondary school. It was the Yr7 field events on Monday, nearly 100 students took part in various events ranging from long jump, shot put and high jump. The students performed brilliantly and have earnt lots of points for their house, the "full" sports day is next Wednesday and many students who are doing track events will be performing infront of the whole school.
" I have just finished visting all the feeder schools and the overwhelming sense of excitement was clear accross all the primaries. I am really looking forward to seeing all Yr6's on Induction Day (1st July) and I'm confident they will enjoy their first experience up at the academy, I am putting the final touches to organising tutor groups and then that information will be passed onto year six teachers. I look forward to seeing you all on Induction Day."
Mr Tilley - Head of Year 7 Year seven raised £92 for Swaziland school by running a charity football tournament, the idea for the fundraiser came from the Yr7 charity team.
All students had a great time out on the new astro and the "Pink" team came out on top. Well done to the 50 Yr7's that got involved in this event........... Last week all year seven students took part in the next round of inter tutor sports competitions, the team work and determination from all involved was excellent.
There was a giant killing in the early rounds as Mrs Glovers beat Miss Ryans tutor group, Luke Rollin played a major part in that victory with four goals to his name. The final was contested between Miss Petits and Mr Balls tutor groups, Mr Balls had won the last competition which was inter tutor dodgeball, so they were strong favourites going into the final match. The sporting talent within his group shone through, coupling that talent with very good tactical awareness they won both games in the final and consequently have the honour of being 2014 Yr7 handball champions. Well done everyo Above are listed all the clubs the PE department are running after the Easter holidays. To take part and get involved all you need to do is bring your kit and correct footwear (round studded boots for astro, trainers for everything else). Just turn up or come to the PE office if you would like more information about the club. Clubs are open to all year groups so bring a friend along
The new astro is on schedule to be ready for use after Easter, it will be great for current students and the new year sixes in September.
The year seven girls football team went down to Exeter to compete in the Devon finals day. The girls played brilliantly and beat teams from all over Devon, class shone through and the girls remained unbeaten all day. Subsequently they made it all the way to the final and beat Ivybridge from South Devon to lift the cup. They are now DEVON champions and deserve a massive pat on the back for representing th eacademy and North Devon so well.
They will get hero status in our achievement assembly later this week and the headteacher has said they will be one of the first teams to use our new astro. "Roy Hodgsen if your watching these girls could be on the plane to Brazil." Twelve year seven students visited Barnstaple hotel as they started on a three year project with other local schools. The PEEP Project (Pupil Engagement Emploment Project) hopes to raise pupils awareness and aspirations in terms of the numerious job opportunities out there for them in the North Devon area and further a field. The students interviewed and answered quizes on various employment sectors, they all agreed that it was nice to get the opportunity to "see what jobs there are out there, and what skills are needed for each role." The second half of the day the students created a news paper report using quotes and images thay had taken of all the different employers on show. The top three groups got prizes and the best article will be published in the North devon Journal !! Another huge success for year seven and a fantastic opportunity that the students really got positively involved in - "YOUR'E HIRED" Year sevens will be involved in the "Big Clean" on the 31st of March at Croyde and Hele beaches. The ammount of marine litter on UK's beaches has increased by over 100% in the last 15 years - so we must do our bit to help the local communities.
