English department fun
Reading-
We have had a very busy but rewarding time with our reading this term. Year 7 pupils have taken part in a reading treasure hunt which has led pupils around the school on a journey to find the top ten tips for reading success. So far, Kiera Payne, CJ Jefferys and Bo Blackmore from 7Bk; Lilly ball, Grace Nuth and Erin Marsh from 7ML and Emily Burgess, Lucie Bailey and Lilli May Willis from 7WG have found the tips and received a prize. Congratulations to you all! It is really important that we read for at least 20 minutes every day and don’t forget to log on to Accelerated Reader to take your quiz when you have finished! By taking your quiz you are boosting your word count and your chance to be in the ‘Millionaire club’. Our leading millionaire at the moment is Lily Ball with 1,596,379 words read to date. Check the notice board on 3B to check where your tutor group is on the leader board. Keep on enjoying your reading!
Writing –
500 words writing competition.
we are currently having a lot of fun with writing too! The English department is running a 500 word writing competition in line with the BBC Radio 2 competition. Many of our students are budding writers and have entered the BBC competition. The competition is run across Years 7 and 8 and pupils across both year groups are involved and writing! The task has really built confidence in writing ability and in reading literature. We now believe that anybody can write a story! The aim of the competition is to be as original and engaging as possible and to keep to the 500 word limit. To get inspired we have thought about the world differently and to posed ‘What if…?’ questions in order to come up with an original setting and situation for our stories. We have explored turning something everyday into something highly extraordinary, which we have found a lot of fun, and ways to subvert the reader’s expectations. Some of us have drawn on our own experiences to really bring our pieces to life which is quite inspiring for the reader. We have also looked at and researched how other writers have been influenced in their work and where they found inspiration. We will be judging entries next week – good luck!
